After experimenting with various costumes, Deemos shares the fact that he can hide his horns to Johnny and Nika. Them being the biggest detriment to their disguising attempts. Finally they found something that worked, and Deemos and Johnny head to the local PetSmart to pick up Max.
In the abyss hellhounds are your usual cerberus sized demon dogs of hell. The only thing that really separates them from normal dogs is there size and appetite. Well that and they're from hell.
Deemos has lived his entire life in the abyss and has only seen the "normal" hellhounds. But upon seeing Max, he is immediately filled with joy at the sight of a miniature sized hellhound that he can actually pet.

I don't know if anyone here is familiar with the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series of books. They are for younger adults (think middle-school), and explore a world where the ancient Greek gods are alive and have been up to their shennanigans of having half-god half-mortal children, code-named Half-Bloods. These kids have great power and abilities (think Achilles), but are dyslexic (everything but Gr33k is greek to them) and trouble makers in the eyes of modern society. Anyway, the books number 5 and are written by Rick Riordan. Good Stuff.

Let's bring it all back to why I'm bringing it up. There is a classic situation in the first book where the kids encounter Cerberus in the Underworld and distract him by using a giant rubber ball, and just showing it attention. The three heads all fight over the ball in goofy ways, and it reminded me of R3v's description of hellhounds and Deemos reaction to Max.
